After an introductory talk in the lecture hall, you can try out the virtual experience with VR headsets in the library. Accompanied by the participating students, you can learn all about the project here or during the 2D exhibition tour in the lecture hall.

Feel free to stop by anytime—you can pass the time by grabbing some snacks from the students’ finger food buffet or taking a quick look at our current exhibition (until 6:00 p.m.).

Sonja Ramsbrock introduces us to the trombone and its significance today. She studied music, majoring in trombone, and has been working with two trombone choirs at the Protestant Church in Bielefeld for 25 years. Under her direction, children, teenagers, and adults learn to play and make music together on brass instruments. On Saz, Awaz Bariş will guide us through the afternoon. We’ll kick things off with a taste of what’s to come at the “Sauerkraut Meets Kimchi” workshop—the participants in that workshop will be joining us for a musical preview. Let’s build bridges together!

Fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kimchi, bread, and kefir have a very long tradition. The various cultures around the world have produced a wide variety of fermented foods. Whether it’s ginger beer or kombucha, bread or soy sauce, or even sauerkraut or kimchi. What all these products have in common is that they are very healthy and have a very long shelf life.

In this workshop, we’ll learn the basics of fermentation and explore two different fermentation cultures. What sets them apart, and where might there be similarities? We make our own sauerkraut and kimchi, and at the end of the session, we taste the already fermented versions. Participants in the “Saz Meets Trombone” workshop will be joining us for a meal, and in return, we’ll be treated to a musical performance afterward. Let’s build bridges together!

About the speakers:
Dr. Fabian Czerwinski is an expert in fermentation and, through his fermentation company “Schnelles Grünzeug,” supplies Bielefeld and the surrounding area with fresh fermented vegetables.

Kyungwon Shin lives in Bielefeld and has brought with her a wealth of knowledge about traditional fermented foods, such as kimchi, from her native Korea. She shares her enthusiasm through various courses.

With “Hot Takes! Kunsthalle Bielefeld x Debattierclub Bielefeld” is an event organized by the Kunsthalle Bielefeld in collaboration with the Debattierclub Bielefeld, inviting participants to take a closer look at controversial perspectives on art. The starting point is a series of provocative theses on the subject of art that regularly spark public debate. You often hear statements like “Anyone can make art” or “Art must be political,” but people rarely delve deeper into these controversial claims. In short debates, members of the Bielefeld Debate Club present and discuss arguments from different perspectives. In doing so, the debaters deliberately take positions that do not necessarily reflect their own views, in keeping with a culture of open debate. Who presents a convincing argument? That’s up to the audience. It’s not about finding definitive answers, but about learning about different perspectives and questioning your own views.

The event is open to anyone interested. “Hot Takes!” offers the opportunity to view the current exhibition from new perspectives and to experience art as a starting point for social dialogue.

The event was developed in collaboration with the Department of Art History at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, led by Prof. Dr. Timo Skrandies, and is being organized in collaboration with the Bielefeld Debate Club.
