The result is an almost luminously transparent space that is set in motion, in which boundaries become fluid and permeable and in which we, the viewers, are reflected dimly in the underlying mirror.<\/p>\n<p>It is an unfamiliar space for our viewing habits because it does not clearly tell us what it is. In our need for orientation, questions inevitably arise: What is the function of space and who are we in it? For centuries, working with fabrics was seen as &#8216;feminine&#8217; and in Western culture as inferior to the genres of painting, sculpture and architecture. The Brutalism on which this work is based, on the other hand, is associated with a male architectural history. Bool dissolves these supposed boundaries. In doing so, she questions fixed definitions of modern art and architectural history and challenges our historically influenced view. Brutalist buildings became part of the reconstruction after the Second World War and shaped the design of many social and public buildings such as schools, offices and apartment blocks. The most striking feature of this architecture is already in its name. This goes back to the French term &#8216;b\u00e9ton brut&#8217;, which means raw concrete.<\/p>\n<p>The fa\u00e7ades of brutalist buildings consist of unpolished, unrendered concrete surfaces that predominantly form geometric shapes. The cubes, blocks and squares are stacked both symmetrically and asymmetrically. They are not decorated with ornaments, playful details or color. Functional elements such as stairs or ventilation systems are usually exposed.
