It has a grumpy look on its face. On the dilapidated yellow house behind him is the inscription “Kinderbewahranstalt” and in the background is a red and blue factory building. Despite the bright colors, the picture creates a dark, cold atmosphere. It is further enhanced by the black and gray sky in contrast with the light blanket of snow. Nurseries emerged – as the forerunners of kindergartens – in the course of industrialization. They were intended to provide care for the children whose parents had to work long hours in the factories under harsh conditions. At the same time, they were places of education where children were taught basic skills for living together in society.

The cold, gloomy atmosphere of the picture illustrates the tension between the care and simultaneous emotional coldness that prevailed in these institutions. Poverty and neglect shaped the reality of the children’s lives. The industrial progress created by humans (technosphere), which made these institutions necessary in the first place, had a direct impact on the social bond with offspring (sociosphere). Care work has largely been outsourced from the home.

         Can art change society?

Conrad Felixmüller felt a connection to the Expressionist art movement, which he came into contact with in Berlin in 1915. He shares their political stance of condemning the war as a crime and opposing nationalist ideas. He sees a social task in his artistic work: the creation of a ‘new human being’. Felixmüller wants to use art to bring about profound change within society.
