Sculptor Germaine Richier, with which she reinterprets Miguel de Cervantes&#8217; tragic hero from the 1605 novel &#8220;Don Quixote&#8221; as a hybrid being. Standing on a flat slab, his slender, emaciated body with its unnaturally long limbs and small head appears rigid and awkward in his posture. He raises his right arm upwards in an inviting gesture, while his left hand holds a thin lance that appears just as fragile as the figure itself. To achieve this, the artist incorporated found, dead branches and pieces of wood into the cast model, which are also visible from the outside. The surface of the body looks uneven and perforated. He doesn&#8217;t look like a strong knight here, but as if he would fall apart at any moment. It is no longer a harmonious image of humanity. Growing up on a vineyard in the south of France, she spent a lot of time outdoors, always on the lookout for unusual finds: Branches, dead insects, stones &#8211; anything that has a special shape, she takes home with her.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Oh, the nature! &#8230;the animals! &#8230;Oh! The insects! &#8230;I collected cocoons to see how silkworms turn out. Oh! Those praying mantises, ants, grasshoppers! Germaine Richier later moved away from this type of sculptural design and found a new form of artistic expression through the influence of nature, among other things, in her imaginative hybrid creatures of animal, human and plant. In these works, she brings people back into connection with nature by combining human fragments with animal and plant fragments. Humans are no longer above nature, but are part of it. Her return marks a decisive turning point in her artistic creative process. Through her contact with the Parisian <a href=\"https:\/\/kunsthalle-bielefeld.de\/en\/discover\/cultural-education\/art-a-to-z\/#avantgarde\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">avant-garde<\/a> (including Hans Arp, Le Corbusier and Alberto Giacometti) and the terrifying reality of the war-torn city, she searched for new ways to deal with the human form. To do this, she broke away from the traditional sculptural guidelines she had learned in her training. Her works do not depict perfectly toned bodies in the style of antiquity, but rather emphasize above all the transience and vulnerability of human beings. In this post-war period, many artists and writers have the impression that humanity as a whole has failed. For him, fiction and reality merge: Alonso believes that the stories of knights in his books are based on true events and decides to travel the world as a glorious knight himself.<\/p>\n<p>As the self-proclaimed &#8220;Don Quixote of La Mancha&#8221;, he sets off on a journey on the back of his horse Rocinante &#8211; his goal: to experience as many adventures as possible and fight for justice, just like the knights in his books. He is accompanied by his neighbor, the farmer Sancho Panza, who serves as his squire.<\/p>\n<p>Don Quixote is convinced that he must fight injustice in the world.
