However, the sculpture is not a portrait of Duse, even if the facial features are similar. Rather, it represents a universal expression of pain, despair and grief. This is because the head was intended to represent a son of Ugolino. According to legend, he was sentenced to death by starvation along with his sons and grandsons. Like The Thinker in front of the Kunsthalle, this motif originally comes from the Gates of Hell. This is the name of the design that Rodin created in 1880 for the portal of the new Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris on behalf of the French state.

The clearly visible roughness and the unfinished effect are characteristic of Rodin’s novel approach to the genre of sculpture. Two other very similar versions in marble belong to the Kunstmuseum Düsseldorf and the Ny Carlsberg Glyptothek in Copenhagen. There are also older and smaller versions of The Pain in plaster and bronze for the Gates of Hell. The large version was not sculpted in marble until after his meeting with Eleonora Duse around 1904. Rodin first modeled the figures in clay in his studio in Meudon (France). A hollow mold is taken from this model as an impression, which is then cast in plaster by molders. The work is then carried out in the final material with the help of practitioners.

The raw and unfinished appearance of the sculpture Pain is typical of Rodin’s working method and characterizes his modern approach to sculpture. Classical sculptures represent an object in an ideal, perfectly formed way. For Rodin, however, the depiction of a particular motif is of secondary importance. He concentrates on making work processes visible in the form and surface design. Pain is a non-finito work. She was already performing on stage at the age of four. Although she never attended drama school, she joined acting troupes from 1878. In 1881, she married the actor Tebaldo Marchetti and had a daughter. The marriage is short-lived. Eleonora Duse still had several relationships with men, e.g. from 1894 a rather unhappy one with the poet Gabriele D’Annunzio, whom she did everything in her power to promote.

Duse’s very special acting style, which was unusual for her time, was initially met with incomprehension. She largely dispenses with the usual means of the time, such as exaggerated emphasis, theatricality, props and make-up. She achieves her effect solely through her expressive facial expressions. From 1891 onwards, she made her international breakthrough, although she only performed in her mother tongue. In January 1909, at the height of her career, she retired from the stage for health reasons. However, financial reasons forced her to resign in May 1921. Nevertheless, she can build on her old successes. During a tour of the USA, Eleonora Duse dies in a hotel in Pittsburgh as a result of pneumonia.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-8604" src="https://kunsthalle-bielefeld.de/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Rodin_Eleonora-Duse_KB-Kosmos.jpg" alt="Black and white bust portrait of a young white woman.
