The remains of a fire smolder in between. An apocalyptic scenario, gray in gray. What happened?<\/p>\n<p>The German artist Anselm Kiefer is known for his monumental works that deal with history, mythology and philosophy. Writing is a system that visually represents and permanently preserves ideas and thoughts. Kiefer sees language, writing and literature as material on which he works. It is often about themes such as memory, trauma and identity. The goddesses of fate are part of the <em>Edda<\/em>, a poem about the gods that originated in Iceland over 700 years ago. They embody the past (Urd), present (Verdandi) and future (Skuld). The Old Norse word &#8216; <em>skuld<\/em>&#8216; also has a double meaning: 1. the future fate, the inevitable 2. guilt as an obligation and consequence. The Norns thus stand for the idea that future events are already laid out in past deeds. Fate is not seen as a simple sequence of events, but as a cycle of cause and effect.<\/p>\n<p>In the poetry of the gods, the appearance of the Norns coincides with the end of a peaceful age. The order of the world is disrupted by chaos, conflicts and natural disasters. War breaks out and <em>Yggdrasil<\/em>, the world tree that embodies the entire universe and the connection of all things, is engulfed in flames. This is shown by the partly still burning, partly charred wood in Kiefer&#8217;s work. The world has come to an end, burnt to ashes. But <em>&#8220;rubble is the future in itself. Because everything that is passes away,&#8221;<\/em> says Anselm Kiefer. He was born shortly before the end of the war in 1945 in the ruins of Donaueschingen and yet he always sees the destruction and the confrontation with past<em>&#8216;guilt<\/em>&#8216; as a new beginning.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;The house next to us was bombed. I never saw this rubble as a negative thing. It&#8217;s a state of transition, of upheaval, of change. I built houses with the stones that were cleaned in the big cities by the so-called rubble women &#8211; today almost a mythological term. This is how religions, myths, legends and fairy tales are born. They are the result of our endeavor to make the thingless, the spiritual, the world of thought tangible. With the writing system, we can pass it on to future generations and make it part of our cultural identity.<\/p>\n<p>Anselm Kiefer uses writing in his artworks to open up additional levels of meaning through a dialog between image and text. The writing often serves as a reference to historical, mythological or literary sources, which he integrates into his works but does not express through a representational motif. By adding text fragments, quotations or names, he gives the viewer clues to the conceptual background of his art. The material is generously spread, poured, smeared, scraped off, chipped or burned onto the canvas. His main themes &#8211; transience, destruction and renewal &#8211; can thus be experienced directly through the material. The emphasis on the material and the large canvases lend his works a physicality that appeals to viewers emotionally. The raw, often dark colors create a profound emotional expression. To this end, he integrates writing from well-known texts, which creates images in the viewer&#8217;s mind and establishes a mental connection to the artwork as well as a visual one.
