I wanted to find a different order, a different value for man, in nature. He should neither be the measure of all things, nor relate everything to his measure, but on the contrary: all things and man should be like nature, without measure.&#8221;  <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Based on the natural, infinite cycle of creation, change and decay, Hans Arps creates a variety of artistic works: Initially ink drawings, collages, wall reliefs made of layered, colorfully painted materials, but also carpets and embroideries. In the 1930s, he then developed three-dimensional, free-standing sculptures. In organic, soft and curved forms, they reach out into the room from the basic oval shape. He uses easy-to-model plaster, which he later casts in bronze. The idea of constant transformation, taken from nature, determines his work from the form to the title.<br \/>\n<em>&#8220;I won&#8217;t let go until enough of my life has flowed into this body. Each of these bodies certainly has a spiritual content, but only when I have nothing more to change do I interpret and name it.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>His sculptures are initially reminiscent of simple natural objects such as pebbles. Later, human, floral or animal forms are added, or hybrid creatures of nature and thing, such as <em>a human viewed from a flower<\/em> (see below).<\/p>\n<p>Arp&#8217;s efforts to blur the boundaries between artwork and natural environment go so far that he literally places the works in the forest without a plinth (see Sculpture \u00e0 \u00eatre perdue dans la for\u00eat below). He does this near his home in Meudon, France, and then waits in anticipation for the reactions of the walkers.<br \/>\n<em>&#8220;These paintings, these sculptures &#8211; these things &#8211; should be anonymous in the great workshop of nature, like the clouds, the mountains, the seas, the animals, the people. They are based on the principles of chance and his idea of artistic activity as a natural process. In nature, results are only preliminary stages. Arp also creates works that contain multiple images and meanings and can always change.<\/p>\n<p>His sculptures, for example, offer new interpretations depending on the viewer&#8217;s point of view. Arp often gives them ambiguous titles in retrospect. He later renamed his sculpture <em>Owl<\/em> to <em>Owl&#8217;s Dream<\/em>. The change of title reflects Arp&#8217;s associative approach. He invites viewers to go beyond the purely representational and find a poetic interpretation. In this way, Arp wants to stimulate the imagination and make the sculpture appear less like an image of an owl and more like something imaginative and dreamlike.<\/p>\n<p>Arp once explained that inventing such a title had often become more important to him than the work itself. Because words can take on physical dimensions. Arp played a decisive role in shaping these art movements. They rejected the traditional view that art is something beautiful and orderly that imitates reality. Instead, they promoted the absurd, the chaotic, the spontaneous, the <a href=\"https:\/\/kunsthalle-bielefeld.de\/en\/discover\/cultural-education\/art-a-to-z\/#abstraktion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abstract<\/a>. For her, art should reflect the contradictions and nonsense of the modern world.<br \/>\n<em>&#8220;in 1916 i was happy to give birth to dada in zurich. dada is for nonsense &#8211; that doesn&#8217;t mean nonsense. dada is nonsensical like nature and life. dada is for nature and against art. like nature, dada wants to give every thing its essential place.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Surrealists and Dadaists reacted in particular to the turbulent political and social conditions at the beginning of the 20th century. Their movements were an expression of protest and a radical rejection of the conventions that they considered responsible for society&#8217;s ills.<br \/>\n<em>&#8220;Disgusted by the slaughter of the 1914 World War, we devoted ourselves to the fine arts in Zurich. While the thunder of the guns rumbled in the distance, we sang, painted, glued and wrote poetry with all our might.
