The other girl looks directly into the camera. It looks at us. What does this girl expect?

Dutch artist Rineke Dijkstra’s work focuses on themes such as identity, transition and vulnerability. She portrays people with her clear visual language. The two girls are still children. At least the girl on the left is still happy about the wrapped present. But the other girl might not be looking forward to her birthday as much as she did in previous years.

All adults and teenagers are probably familiar with this: As a child, you could still play carefree, had a lot of imagination, looked forward to Christmas and birthdays. Climate change, environmental degradation and technological developments are changing our planet decisively. Wars are an additional factor of insecurity. Children who live in cities spend less time in nature than in earlier times. They know trees from parks like Berlin’s Tiergarten, but they have less and less direct contact with forests. This applies at least to countries where most people live in ever larger cities.

Children grow up with fears about the future. Planet Earth and its natural environment are being increasingly polluted or destroyed. Climate change leads to droughts, storms and floods. Many children feel responsible for this. Some become active as children or young people and campaign for their own future on a planet worth living on, for example in groups such as Fridays for Future.

“Children’s chances of growing up well and having a future worth living in Germany vary greatly. Many children grow up in good conditions. But there are also a considerable number of children whose rights to a good upbringing are not or hardly taken into account. This is a problem for the children themselves, but also for the future of our society.”
This is how the UNICEF report on the situation of children in Germany 2023 summarizes the situation.

According to the Shell Youth Study 2024, most young people in Germany between the ages of 12 and 25 are pragmatic about their situation in the world, although they are worried about their future.
