Robert Smithson built it in 1970 in the Great Salt Lake in Utah, USA. He did this with the help of a construction company and its excavators and lorries. The artist wanted to use the processes of nature in his art and make them tangible. <i>Spiral Jetty<\/i> is a work of art that is sometimes above and sometimes below the surface of the water, depending on the water level of the lake. And depending on the season, the water has different colors due to the salt content and the presence of various algae. The work is also ephemeral: erosion by water and weather will wear it away over the years.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Smithson also sees the natural processes in nature at work in everything that humans create: Buildings don&#8217;t last forever, cars rust, entire civilizations eventually disappear. Perhaps even the whole of humanity.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Smithson makes a film about the construction of <i>Spiral Jetty<\/i> and the finished work of art. For him, however, works of art are alive: They should be in a &#8216;real&#8217; environment in exchange with natural processes and the people looking at them. A museum like the Kunsthalle Bielefeld is there to ensure that works of art are preserved in the best possible way in a controlled indoor climate. This is also the reason why the art in a museum is not normally allowed to be touched. Robert Smithson finds such specifications sterile. In his opinion, art should change with the times. He wants the influence of the weather, but also of geology (i.e. movements of the earth&#8217;s surface) on a work of art to be visible.<\/p>\n<p><i>Spiral Jetty<\/i> is a good example of this: the natural changes that occur in a real lake cannot take place in a museum. Robert Smithson&#8217;s ideas are a radical challenge for museums: museums are an important repository of images of our culture, which should create identity for a long time &#8211; we are part of the &#8216;cultural memory&#8217;. It consumes a lot of energy. Air conditioning in particular consumes a lot of electricity. If we want to save CO2 and be CO2-neutral in a few years&#8217; time, we need to use electricity from renewable sources such as the sun and wind.<\/p>\n<p>However, as the global demand for electricity will increase in the coming years due to new technological developments such as artificial intelligence, we as a museum will also have to consume less electricity. One possibility is the so-called &#8216;extended climate corridor&#8217;: this involves fluctuations in temperature and humidity. We know from research that many types of art can tolerate major fluctuations without being harmed. The material plays a major role here: a drawing on paper, for example, is quite sensitive, whereas a bronze sculpture is not.<\/p>\n<p>The Kunsthalle Bielefeld has therefore joined an initiative that enables such extended climate corridors for the loan of works.
