At this time, she was still working in seclusion and spent a lot of time on still lifes. <i>Woman with Chives<\/i> combines the still life with a portrait and can also be read as a social critique.<\/p>\n<p>The painting addresses the traditional role of women &#8211; as housewives, mothers, cooks and wives. The woman in the picture seems to be forced into this role. She sits passively at the table, as if trapped by the expectations others have of her. Her head, made up only of chives, reinforces this impression. After the birth of her son in 1964 and her early marriage, she felt torn between wanting to lead a self-determined life and struggling with society&#8217;s expectations of what a &#8216;good mother&#8217; and wife should be. Anna Oppermann is a keen student of psychology, and in particular of Sigmund Freud&#8217;s psychoanalysis, according to which the ego is the &#8216;helmsman&#8217; of a person, divided into three instances: the ego, the id and the superego.<br \/>\nFears of the ego are noted on the small piece of paper: according to Freud, the ego can be afraid of violence or the urge of the instinctive desires of the id, for example the sexual instinct. The strict demands and moral standards of the superego can also be a cause of anxiety, which would be fear of conscience. True anxiety relates to sources of danger that lie outside the person. An example of this would be the outbreak of a fire in the immediate vicinity. According to Sigmund Freud, the role of the ego is to mediate between the id, the superego and the outside world.<\/p>\n<p>What has this got to do with this work?<\/p>\n<p>Chives are one of the plants that Anna Oppermann finds particularly interesting. It appears in many of her works. When chives are cut, they grow back.
