There, the painter directed the Bauhaus stage, where experimental, new forms of theater were tested. Schlemmer is particularly interested in the relationship between man and space. This relationship can also be found in the painting Two Women at the Table: the subject of the painting initially appears unspectacular. But its design with two identical female figures is something special. They look as if they are two pieces from the same series. Like components of a harness, for example. Oskar Schlemmer perceives the effect of figures in space as if they were geometric solids.

         The Bauhaus: A brief description

The Bauhaus was one of the first design colleges. It existed in Weimar from 1919 to 1925. This was followed by his time in Dessau from 1925 to 1932. In 1933, only a short time after moving to Berlin, the Bauhaus was closed under National Socialist pressure.

Architecture was considered the supreme discipline of the Bauhaus. All three directors – Walter Gropius, Hannes Meyer and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe – were architects. The Bauhaus style with its clear lines and elegant geometric shapes was extremely influential for modern architecture.

However, the aims of the Bauhaus were not only of an architectural nature; it was not until 1927 that a separate architecture course was set up. Important Bauhaus goals followed social demands. It was about the integration of art, craft and technology into a modern education system. All sectors should come together under the umbrella of architecture and improve social reality.

Material studies in the classroom and critical reflection on them replaced traditional academic art education. The legendary preliminary course at the Bauhaus is still a model for developing a feel for different materials at design schools today.

The Bauhaus emerged from two different schools, the Grand Ducal School of Arts and Crafts and the Academy of Art. Thus the history of its creation already shows the abolition of a strict separation between applied and fine art. All Bauhaus students should be able to develop their talents across all disciplines – for the benefit of the general public.

Gropius was interested in a comprehensible and financially affordable penetration of everyday life through aesthetic principles. Artists should fulfill a social function. The title of an important Bauhaus exhibition from 1923 was accordingly: Art and technology. A new unit.

Tip for further reading:
Detailed information on everything to do with the Bauhaus can be found on the website of the Bauhaus-Archiv Museum für Gestaltung.

Discover more works about people in the technological world:

Wire figure Homo with back figure on the hand

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-8480" src="https://kunsthalle-bielefeld.de/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/1500-Oskar-Schlemmer-Drahtfigur-Aufn1_Webseite_KB-Kosmos.jpg" alt="A large seated human figure in profile.
