With few colors and clear forms, Rohlfs has reduced the scene to the essentials. At the age of over 70, he paints in a very expressive style that focuses on feelings and impressions rather than details.<\/p>\n<p>The sower is a biblical figure. In the Christian tradition, sowing is a symbol of hope and new beginnings. The soil in the picture appears fertile and ready to give birth to life. In 1927, it was bought for the St\u00e4dtisches Kunsthaus, the predecessor of the Kunsthalle Bielefeld. In 1937 it was confiscated by the National Socialists as \u2018degenerate art\u2019. Fortunately, it was not destroyed as so many other works. After many years in private hands, it was reacquired in 1982.
