This one is special: the couple are wearing gas masks. Physical proximity is therefore limited to the area below the head.

Bielefeld-born artist Theo Ortmann lived through the First World War (1914-1918). In this war, poison gas is used as a weapon. For example, in the ten-month battle for Verdun in 1916. Gas and a large number of explosive grenades lead to terrible injuries, soldiers often have to sleep with gas masks and go without food for days. Of the two million French and German soldiers, between 500,000 and almost one million died – there is no exact figure. ‘The hell of Verdun’, ‘blood pump’, ‘bone mill’ – this is how the soldiers themselves described this battle.

Theo Ortmann works on his art against the background of such experiences. War changes people. Lovers did not have to wear gas masks. But war experiences leave traumas, i.e. serious psychological injuries. And this can mean that intimacy with other people is no longer possible.

The First World War: an industrialized war

The First World War is considered the first modern war – an industrialized material battle.
