The mother does not look in our direction, but devotes all her attention to her child. The artist allows us to share an intimate moment between mother and child, opening up a space for memories of our own childhood. The mother appears larger than life and thus takes on a symbolic, protective character. She is portrayed in an informal, natural way in a natural setting. This leads to an association with ‘Mother Earth’.

Max Beckmann’s painting combines several social and socio-critical themes and invites us to reflect on coexistence in general – between humans and nature, and between humans. Beckmann’s father died shortly after he was born and his siblings were much older than he was. As a result, his mother was his sole carer during his childhood. Max Beckmann left the art school in Weimar without graduating and instead travelled extensively. When Beckmann was 22, he was devastated by the death of his mother.

A few years later, at the beginning of the First World War, Beckmann volunteered to look after the wounded in the war. In 1915 he suffered a nervous breakdown and was given leave of absence. During and after the war, he dealt with the events in many graphic works. His subsequent works were created in an expressionist style, expressing emotion and inner turmoil through expressive, fragmented forms and colours.

In April 1933, Beckmann lost his teaching position at the Städelschule as a result of the ‘Law for the Restoration of the Professional Civil Service’. At the same time, the National Socialists also organised the first exhibitions in which modern art was to be devalued as so-called ‘degenerate art’. Works by Max Beckmann were also included. Four years later, he left Germany with his wife and spent the war years in the Netherlands. After the end of the war, he emigrated to the USA.

Detailed information on Beckmann’s life and where his works were exhibited can be found here.

Discover another work of the artist:

Seascape with poplars

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-8558" src="https://kunsthalle-bielefeld.de/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Max-Beckmann-Seelandschaft-mit-Pappeln-1924_Webseite_KB-Kosmos.jpg" alt="An abstract park landscape painted in simple shapes and predominantly yellow and green tones.
