In free moments, he captured the horror directly at the front. This small painting shows the great destructive madness: wild lines, strong colors and dark surfaces that depict inner turmoil, destruction and chaos.<\/p>\n<p>Dix wanted to show the &#8216;ugliness&#8217; and &#8216;violence&#8217; of war in order to document the raw, unleashed nature of man. It reveals what can break out at any time behind our cultivated behavior. Among other things, he created around 500 small-format works on paper. For him, the war was a <em>&#8220;horrible but powerful&#8221;<\/em> experience that he wanted to capture as a painter.<\/p>\n<p>In paintings and drawings such as <em>Graben durch Angr\u00e8s-Chiffren<\/em>, he captured the chaos and brutal reality at the front. The <a href=\"https:\/\/kunsthalle-bielefeld.de\/en\/discover\/cultural-education\/art-a-to-z\/#abstraktion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abstract<\/a> depiction, a colorful chaos of expressive, dynamic shapes and colors, reflects the noise and movement of war. The illustration does not show any specific objects. Only individual lines and shapes suggest bomb craters and a destroyed landscape. This deliberate dissolution of clear, recognizable forms and the reproduction of real objects into a jumble illustrates the mass destruction of the First World War. When millions of people die, the individual is lost. Personal fates are reduced to an anonymous number of the fallen. In addition to hundreds of small-format pictures, he wrote around 300 field postcards. All these documents reveal Dix&#8217;s divided relationship to the war: on the one hand he was fascinated and curious, on the other traumatized and frightened.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;The war was a terrible thing, but it was still something huge. I couldn&#8217;t miss it under any circumstances!&#8221;<\/em> declared the artist in 1961.<\/p>\n<p>The war showed him a side of man that he described as <em>an &#8220;unleashed state&#8221;<\/em>. Being human here meant: Violence, fear and raw energy. Only in war, Dix believed, could this unadorned side of man really be recognized. His works document this human condition as a mixture of survival instinct and destructive rage.
