The exposure time of the photos is always the same as the film. The light from the projection of each individual film image merges into a bright, white rectangle. The content of the movie doesn&#8217;t matter, because the screen seems empty. The light focused on it illuminates the room instead. What otherwise disappears in the shadows of the film images becomes visible again: Curtains, stucco decorations, abandoned galleries and movie theater seats.<\/p>\n<p>Sugimoto paralyzes the machine of the dream factory and thus draws our attention back to the question: What did we build it for? A place that inevitably reminds you of childhood &#8211; a time full of dreams and fantasy. For many adults, the cinema is a bridge back to this time.<\/p>\n<p>Dreams and movies reflect our innermost wishes, fears and ideas. Both take us into a world to which we react strongly emotionally, even though we know that it has no real impact on us. In both experiences, we are passive observers who lose our sense of the boundaries of space and time. In the cinema, this effect is achieved by the darkened room directing our entire concentration to the content of the movie. We hardly notice that there are other people in the room and that a technical device is needed to create this world. Sugimoto&#8217;s photography breaks up this state of affairs.
