The exposure time of the photos is always the same as the film. The light from the projection of each individual film image merges into a bright, white rectangle. The content of the movie doesn&#8217;t matter, because the screen seems empty. The light focused on it illuminates the room instead. What otherwise disappears in the shadows of the film images becomes visible again: Curtains, stucco decorations, abandoned galleries and movie theater seats.<\/p>\n<p>Sugimoto paralyzes the machine of the dream factory and thus draws our attention back to the question: What did we build it for? Their arrivals and departures break our perception that time stands still during a visit to the movies. The strips also reveal Sugimoto&#8217;s working process. The illusion of the camera as a tool for unadulterated snapshots is broken.<\/p>\n<p>But even the cinema space is not as permanent and unchanging as the halls of indoor cinemas might suggest. In a drive-in movie theater, the screen is closer to nature than the audience behind car windows. In addition, although everyone watches the same movie at the same time, the perception of space during the movie depends heavily on the respective cars.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the history of cinema itself draws attention to the transience of places. The <em>Union City Drive-In<\/em> opened at the end of March 1966 near San Francisco. It was popular in the area and grew over time from one to six screens. At the end of March 1998, the drive-in movie theater was closed and demolished.
