class=\"col-12\">\n                     <p>Hockney says he has read all 220 fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm and actually wanted to illustrate more than six. But once he had started, he simply couldn&#8217;t stop after one or two drawings per fairy tale. However, the result should not be too extensive and therefore too expensive. In the end there were 39 etchings, which were published in 1970 by the Petersburg Press in London together with the fairy tale texts. Each picture was printed in a limited edition of 100 and the printing plates were then destroyed.<\/p>\n<p>The etchings concentrate on emphasizing a mood or a detail from the texts instead of directly showing the course of the plot, as usual illustrations do. The boy who left home to learn fear is such a strange Gothic story; I&#8217;d no idea how to illustrate it. As the fairy tale texts by the Brothers Grimm are based on old European folk tales, some of the inspiration comes from the Renaissance (clothing, for example, was inspired by Vittore Carpaccio (1465-1525) and Hieronymus Bosch&#8217;s (ca. 1450-1516) Madonna and Child was a direct model for <a href=\"https:\/\/gerrishfineart.com\/product\/the-enchantress-with-the-baby-rapunzel-rapunzel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Enchantress with the Baby Rapunzel<\/em><\/a>). Hockney also traveled to Germany and photographed and sketched medieval architecture and castles on the Rhine. The painting also shows two people facing each other, one of whom is covered with a white sheet reminiscent of a shroud or a ghost. In this way, it draws attention to the fragility of human life. This is also what the sexton wants to show the young man in the fairy tale when he disguises himself as a ghost to scare him. Hockney clearly shows that it doesn&#8217;t work. The young man is relaxed about this embodiment of his own transience. His face shows no fear, his hands are not raised protectively in defense, but buried deep in his trouser pockets.<\/p>\n<p>The strong contrast between the dark background and the light-colored figures reinforces the feeling of confrontation. All our attention is drawn to it, there is nothing to distract us from it. At its core, it is about growing emotionally in the face of life&#8217;s challenges and finding yourself. According to this fairy tale, we should actively seek out new experiences and knowledge. We should act courageously, with perseverance and without prejudice and have no irrational fears. At the same time, it points out that we are immature and lack empathy if we completely lack basic emotions such as fear.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>The story in brief:<br \/>\n<\/em>The younger of two brothers finds it difficult to learn anything and is afraid of nothing. When his father demands that he learn something to earn his living, he replies: &#8220;I would like to learn something; yes, if I could, I would like to learn so that I would be scared; I don&#8217;t understand anything about it yet.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>At first, the sexton tries to scare him by disguising himself as a ghost. But the young man only sees a figure that doesn&#8217;t answer him and wants to get up to mischief. After two warnings, he pushes the disguised man down the stairs, breaking his leg. The furious father then sends him away with 50 thalers.<\/p>\n<p>On the journey, various people try to teach him to be afraid, but nothing works. The innkeeper finally sends him to an enchanted castle. There are evil spirits guarding great treasures. Whoever survives them for three nights and thus frees the castle may marry the king&#8217;s daughter. At night, the young man is attacked by animal monsters and various ghosts. But instead of being afraid, he remains calm and defeats them with courage, cunning and strength.<\/p>\n<p>So he passes the task and marries the king&#8217;s daughter, but he still wants to learn to fear. As her husband sleeps, the king&#8217;s daughter pours a bucket of cold water with fish over him.
