The renowned art historian and curator Prof. Dr. Wulf Herzogenrath will present his new book on Wednesday, September 11, 2024 at 18:00 in the Kunsthalle Bielefeld. It contains a collection of guestbook entries by numerous artists whom Herzogenrath has met over the last sixty years.<\/p>\n
The book presentation is part of our current exhibition “More than painting. Blick in die Sammlung #8” (7.7.-10.11.24), which shows a selection of works that Wulf Herzogenrath donated to the Kunsthalle Bielefeld on his 80th birthday. The exhibition presents works that have expanded the field of art through media since the 1960s.<\/p>\n
Since his first published text on contemporary art in 1966, Herzogenrath has been particularly committed to contemporary art. His new book brings together numerous of his texts on 160 artists, which appear here in the original design of their first publication, as well as 212 mostly spontaneous guestbook entries – sketches, collages and photographic works – by the respective artists. Herzogenrath kept his guest book at home and in the office, but also took it with him on visits to studios and exhibitions. Commentary texts explain the context and occasion of the artistic “guest gifts”.<\/p>\n
Together with the art historical contributions, the entries trace Herzogenrath’s path from the Kunsthaus Bielefeld via the Museum Folkwang in Essen, the K\u00f6lnischer Kunstverein, the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin and the Kunsthalle Bremen to the Akademie der K\u00fcnste in Berlin. They result in a very personal and surprising journey through the lively art history of the last sixty years across a wide range of art styles and media, reflecting the breadth of contemporary art.<\/p>\n
The book was published in 2024 by Alexander Verlag Berlin, edited by Elisabeth Klotz. After the book presentation, there will be an opportunity to purchase the book and have it signed.<\/p>\n

\nWulf Herzogenrath (born 1944) completed his doctorate in 1970 on the murals of Oskar Schlemmer; edited the catalog “50 years of bauhaus” (traveling exhibition 1968-1971); curator of the exhibition “bauhaus utopias” (1988 in Budapest, Madrid and Cologne). Many individual publications on the art of the twentieth and 21st century, with a focus on Bauhaus, media art and art education. 1973-1989 Director of the K\u00f6lnischer Kunstverein; 1989-1994 Chief Curator of the Nationalgalerie Berlin; 1994-2011 Director of the Kunsthalle Bremen. Participation in documenta 6 and 8. Member of the Akademie der K\u00fcnste Berlin since 2006, Head of the Visual Arts Section 2012-2021; until 2022 jury chairman of the Kaiserrings Goslar and curator of the series “im Atelier Liebermann” in Berlin. He lives in Berlin and Cologne.<\/p>\n
