Room text 2 OG: Angela Bulloch (*1966, Canada)

Angela Bulloch  combines art, space, and digital technology in her work. Like the artists of Light and Space, she incorporates technical innovations. Bulloch has been using pixels, the smallest unit of the digital image, as her artistic material since 2000. With “Fundamental Single: RYB” (2011), the pixel itself becomes a three-dimensional, cube of coloured light, visible, animated and tangible in space.

In “Z Point” (2001) Bulloch completely reproduces a film scene by Antonioni into a grid of interconnected boxes with an animation of coloured light sequences. Cinema is reinterpreted as coloured light, rhythm and sound playing out within a grid wall of her own devices – the Pixel_Boxes.

Bulloch’s works tie in with the tradition of Light and Space, but extend it into the digital present, in which light is simultaneously an image signal, an information carrier, and an aesthetic experience.

The sound track for Z Point 2001 was composed and performed by David Grubbs.
