Room text: Mary Corse (*1945, USA)
Mary Corse is one of the few women to be one of the central representatives of the Light and Space Movement. Unlike many of her male colleagues, she remained devoted to painting and developed it into a medium that not only depicts light, but uses it as its own mean.
To achieve this, Corse mixes retro-reflective, light-reflecting glass particles into her paints, similar to those used in road markings. The result is a changing, shimmering play of light that appears different depending on the viewing angle and the incidence of light. The seemingly monochrome images begin to shine and immediately engage the viewer. In this way, Corse expands painting to include an experience of light that is not only painted but can also be experienced in the work itself.
