Room text: Tatsuo Miyajima (*1957, Japan)
Tatsuo Miyajima has been exploring the experience of time and its meaning for over thirty years. His LED installations show recurring sequences of the numbers 1 to 9—he deliberately omits 0. This excludes stagnation or a definite conclusion. The sequence of numbers symbolizes constant becoming—a central principle of Zen Buddhism, which Miyajima takes up in his work.
In the ceiling installation “Intense Light Digit” (2023), numerous LEDs form a rhythmic light pattern that transforms the space into an intense atmosphere. As the work hovers above visitors‘ heads, they are invited to pursue the incessant flow of time and existence.
