Thomas Handke: What does the Kunsthalle Bielefeld sound like?
Cooperation with the HSBI 2022/23
Following in the footsteps of the “Walking Artists”, Thomas Handke uses hearing and walking to translate the striking architecture of the Kunsthalle into an acoustic experience. Handke walks around the building, recording the sounds produced by the handle of a brush being passed along the façade. The uniform walkway along all sides of the building creates an acoustic representation of the architectural features: The sound reflects the placement of doors, windows or fence elements, but the main focus is on the most striking feature, the red sandstone and its stratification. Like a record player needle, the handle ‘reads’ the fine grooves and translates the visually striking architecture into an acoustic experience.
The work was created as part of text-image seminars with Prof. Roman Bezjak and Prof. Dr. Andreas Beaugrand from the Department of Design at Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences in the winter semester 2022/2023 and summer semester 2023.
