Light is a symbol of the divine, of hope, knowledge or transcendence. Art has also taken up this motif time and again – from the luminous gold background of medieval icons to the immaterial spatial experiences of the art of the Light and Space Movement. Spirituality is therefore a central theme.
Together with Pastor Lars Hofnagel and the curators Laura Rehme and Benedikt Fahrnschon, we will walk through the exhibition “Alles Licht” and discover how spiritual dimensions unfold in the works.
With “Sociology is a Martial Sport” (2009) by director Pierre Carles, the Kunsthalle Bielefeld invites you on a fascinating journey into the thinking of Pierre Bourdieu as part of the exhibition “Pierre Bourdieu’s Sociological View” (15.11.2025 – 1.3.2026). Pierre Bourdieu (1930-2002) is considered one of the most important sociologists of the 20th century. The film shows him as a passionate intellectual who tirelessly questions social power structures and campaigns for a fairer world.
With analytical acuity, humor and personal warmth, Bourdieu guides us through central questions of our time: social inequality, the impact of education, the power of networks and the subtle mechanisms of symbolic violence. At the same time, the film is a lively portrait of a thinker who does not remain in an ivory tower, but actively participates in social discourse.
Sociology is a martial art is an inspiring plea for critical thinking – a must-read for anyone who wants to better understand our society.
The movie is in French with German subtitles.
Electronic sounds in the middle of the exhibition with “Nummer zu Platz”.
With the Sound Collection, Kunsthalle Bielefeld and Volksbank Bielefeld-Gütersloh invite you to an evening at the museum unlike any other. Listen to the electronic sounds of the crew from Nr. z. P., stroll through the exhibitions and spend a relaxing time surrounded by art.
The museum closes at 21:00, but the event will continue until 1:00 at Café Gemach Manhatten.
In cooperation with: Volksbank in Ostwestfalen eG, Volksbank Lobby, No. z. P.
Light surrounds us and light makes the world visible to us.
But what happens when light and color influence each other in such a way that strokes that have just been painted suddenly disappear? Or when light “burns” objects, plants or photos onto a sheet of paper?
This is exactly what you can find out and experiment with at the Kunsthalle Bielefeld’s studio Farbenrausch! Glasses with red and blue lenses are available, as well as materials for light pictures with turmeric.
And the fun doesn’t stop there: Further experiments take place in parallel in the Knowledge Workshop. There, various drinks and foods are closely scrutinized. Have you ever looked at an energy drink under UV light? Seen pink spinach? Or fireworks made from turmeric? All this awaits you in the Wissenswerkstadt!
Get ready for a day full of science and art to participate in, marvel at and discover! You can start in both houses – both events are free to explore between 1-5 pm and are thematically linked.
Note: The Atelier Farbenrausch is not barrier-free
