Thomas Ruff (*1958) and James Welling (*1951) are among the best-known photo artists of the present day. In their works, they explore the conditions of visual perception, also in relation to our use of photographic equipment, and the conditioning of our view of the world through photographic images. The exhibition “Dark Matter. Thomas Ruff, James Welling” concentrates on works that bring new possibilities to the photographic image and expand our imagination. We perceive our environment subjectively, we see and feel it against the background of what we can grasp and understand in traditional images and words.

Around eighty percent of the matter in the universe consists of a substance that we do not know: Dark matter. Is it similar with the photographic image? Does it hide more than it shows?

The exhibition is sponsored by the Sparkasse Bielefeld Foundation and the LWL Cultural Foundation.

Between color volume, drippings and braiding
German women artists of the Informel after 1945

In the literature on Art Informel, abstract art in Germany after 1945, the role of women in this art movement is rarely mentioned. This is where we begin to fill this void. We present four German women artists of the post-war period and explain the special German cultural scene of the time in which they were active.

Hybrid painting in post-digital times
The upright picture is completely filled with a blue and white grid of squares divided into triangles. The white lines are arranged in such a way that the central area of the picture appears to have been moved backwards, creating step-like shapes.
